The State of Black SciFi 2012: My Favorite Black SF event is The Afrofuturistic Affair in Philly which took place on October 28, 2011. When I was first invited by Rasheedah Phillips I knew that it was going to be something special. On the way to Philly, I watched the scenery from the car window change from City Brooklyn streets to open road and then to streets filled with trolley lines only intensified the journey. The event was held at Philadelphia Printworks and involved an Afro-Sci-Fi Theme with Costumes and Sci-Fi Philly dialect….I felt at home. The space was dim-lit and almost post-global transition(apocalyptic terms I do not like) giving the full impression that we were in some in-between world. We were. Poets and musicians filled the air with cultural undertones of the future world to come. I also had the pleasure of meeting Nicole Sconiers, whose travel to Philly from LA truly inspired me along with her family’s willingness to promote her work. I read
