State of Black Sci-Fi 2012 Day 6…My Tribute to SF Icon Octavia Butler
“All struggles are essentially power struggles. Who will rule? Who will lead? Who will define, refine, confine, design? Who will dominate? All struggles are essentially power struggles, and most are no more intellectual than two rams knocking their heads together.” ― Octavia E. Butler
An icon is a graphic representation of a symbol, person, place or thing that draws in collective symbolism of an idea or concept. Usually it is a noted figure in the life-story of this planet representing one of the expressed fields of thought.
Science Fiction is:
*Science fiction is a genre of fiction dealing with imaginary but more or less plausible (or at least non-supernatural) content such asfuture settings, futuristic science and technology, space travel, aliens, and paranormal abilities.

Why do Terrans make things so difficult?
In short, a Sf Icon is anyone who inspires mental alchemy and conceptual imprints on the brain. With that being said, there is only one person who left a long-standing imprint on my thoughts and that is Octavia Butler. Octavia entered this world June 22, 1947 and followed her etched energy pattern to go on to become one of the most well-known yet reclusive Sci-Fi Writers in our life cycle. She finished her mission and exited her shell February 24, 2006.
Without question, she is one who is in the Sci-Fi world yet not of it. Her presence attracted much attention, awards and grants from the main-stream industry.
Octavia was labeled as ‘paralytically shy and a daydreamer, and was later diagnosed as being dyslexic’ which just a technical way of saying that she possessed introspective and psychic abilities not normally seen within the flesh field of society….she is gifted.
My first introduction to Octavia was Wildseed. I found it very difficult to follow at first because it completely stepped out of
It changed my world and perspective.
In my mind, whatever she wrote became real and with a strong ability for application in our waking world. I went on to read other novels: Patternmaster, Clay’s Ark, Mind of Mind, Adulthood Rites and Fledgling. Her writings spoke of worlds that where technology was ruled by the mind and not gadgets. Psychic abilities and non-gmo biotechnology ruled the flow of her novels. An ancient future from Kemet(Egypt) filled her pages and inspired mental alchemy through entertainment. During the period that I read Octavia, I studied martial sciences, shiatsu, chi-kung and meditation…along with the occasional study of sake’ bars. I am a very visual person. So the combination of repetitive muscle and skeletal motions along with the constant imprinting of images of Octavia’s works in my mind caused very lucid dreaming at night when my astral body took its stroll.
Eventually, I received a transmission from an interstellar-being by name of Serqet…Renpet
*PS – During reading of this post, wherever Octavia is referred to as past tense please replace with present tense. Black Sci-Fi = Immortal presence of energy/spirit.
“I’m a pessimist if I’m not careful, a feminist, a Black,…an oil-and-water combination of ambition, laziness, insecurity, certainty, and drive.” ― Octavia E. Butler
